HISTORY

The community of Nikoklia is situated 17 kilometres south-east of Pafos and it is the first village to be found on the road toward the mountain resorts of Cyprus and toward Troodos. The distances were much reduced with the construction of the new Limassol - Pafos & Nikoklia - Troodos road. Transport from Nikoklia to Limassol takes about 25 minutes whereas going to Troodos takes about an hour. It is a 5 minute drive from the airport of Pafos.

It is built at an average altitude of 80 meters, in a beautiful, natural landscape in the west bank of the Diarizos river. West of the village -and at a small distance -lies the Asprokremmos dam. With Regards to transportation, the village connects to the villages Souskiou and Fasoula (of Pafos) in the north-east and to the Pafos-Limassol main road in the south-west.

Vines of the wine-making variety, citrus-trees, legumes, peanuts, cereals, forage plants, vegetables, carobs, and olive trees were previously cultivated in the region of Nikoklia. Today the inhabitants of the village are occupied with various jobs in Pafos and have Farming and Stockbreeding as a secondary occupation.

The village has gone through many fluctuations of its population. In 1881 the inhabitants were 73, decreasing to 48 in 1891 but increasing to 65 in 1901, to 72 in 1911, to 79 in 1921, to 107 in 1931, to 133 in 1946, and to 139 in 1960. Afterwards, emigration and the urban pull struck the community and -as a result -the inhabitants decreased to 116 in 1976 and to 92 in 1982. In the 2001 census the community's inhabitants were 105.

According to tradition, the village took its name from "Nikokles" who was the last king of the ancient kingdom of Pafos and kept his palaces in the village. This is ensured by the archaeological findings that were previously found in the community but -due to the inhabitants' ignorance regarding their archaeological value -were destroyed and stolen. However, it is probable that it took the name from some other "Nikokles" (male) or even some "Nikoklia" (female).

Nikoklia is not mentioned in mediaeval sources. It is probable that during the Frank Domination era it was a part of the Kouklia feud that -as De Masse Latri testifies -was a large royal estate where primarily sugarcane was cultivated.

The community has a very good climate with cool wind blowing down from the Troodos mountain range -in the summer -through the river's rift. In the spring a beautiful scent covers the region, which comes from the blooming of the various trees that exist in the whole range of the community. During the months of winter the climate is mild.

A characteristic of Nikokleia's community is the large variety of birds, reptiles, and butterflies that exist in its region. Several ornithologists, herpetologists, and entomologists visit the area so as to study the above species. Quite a few of foreign and Cypriot tourists visit the region in order to admire these unique species that exist in the region.
